The most common issue I see in Algerian offices and hotels is a WiFi network designed for a house, installed inside a commercial building. The result: random disconnects, dead zones, video calls that drop mid-sentence, and staff quietly switching to mobile data at their own desks.

1. The real difference between home and professional WiFi

A consumer router — even a good one from TP-Link or Xiaomi — is built for 15-20 simultaneous devices in an 80-120 m² space. A 10-person office already has 30 devices once you count laptops, phones and tablets. Add printers, IP cameras, and VoIP handsets, and you're at 50.

A professional access point like the Huawei AirEngine 5761-11 handles 512 simultaneous connections, supports WiFi 6 (802.11ax), and is managed centrally through a controller. The performance difference through reinforced concrete corridors is dramatic.

2. Doing a real coverage study

Before placing a single access point, we run a coverage simulation in Ekahau using the actual floor plan and real building materials — reinforced concrete, double partitions, glazing. A 20cm concrete wall attenuates signal by 15-20 dB depending on frequency. A corridor with metal doors can block 5 GHz entirely.

2.4 GHz travels farther but the band is crowded with interference from neighboring networks. 5 GHz delivers higher throughput but loses 30-40% of its range. WiFi 6E in the 6 GHz band offers a completely clean spectrum — but only if client devices actually support it.

For a 60-room, 4-floor hotel: typically one AP per corridor (covering 8-12 rooms), plus dedicated APs for the lobby, restaurant, and conference room — 10 to 14 APs total depending on layout.

3. VLANs: the network isolation every professional setup should demand

Without VLAN segmentation, a compromised IP camera can become a path into your file server. That's not theoretical — it's a documented attack pattern since 2018.

4. Real-world throughput vs the marketing number

An AP marketed as "WiFi 6 AX3000" advertises 3,000 Mbps. In practice, in a hotel corridor 10 meters from the AP with 20 connected clients, expect 80-120 Mbps per client — which is excellent. But if your internet line is only 100 Mbps shared across the whole hotel, the connection is the bottleneck, not the WiFi.

Our standard sizing: 10 Mbps guaranteed per room for a standard hotel, 25 Mbps for a 4-5 star property with business travelers. For 60 rooms × 10 Mbps = 600 Mbps recommended internet capacity. In practice, peak simultaneous usage runs 30-40%, so a well-managed 300 Mbps fiber line can serve a 60-room hotel comfortably.
