Home automation in Algeria has two recurring problems: systems installed by generalists that stop working within two years, and clients who never learn how to actually use what they paid for. After roughly fifteen automated villas in Constantine, here's what I've learned actually moves the needle.
1. Choosing a protocol: the decision nobody explains properly
Home automation lives or dies on the communication protocol between devices. Three main families exist:
- Wi-Fi — easy to install, no extra wiring. The problem: your router becomes a single point of failure. If the Djezzy or Algérie Télécom connection drops, or the router reboots, everything stops responding. Not acceptable in a luxury villa.
- Zigbee / Z-Wave — a dedicated radio protocol, independent of Wi-Fi. More reliable, with mesh networking between devices. Requires a central hub (coordinator). This is what we use with Orvibo.
- KNX (wired) — the European professional standard. Every switch and actuator connects via a dedicated bus cable. Extremely reliable, but it has to be planned at the shell-construction stage — the cabling goes in before the walls close.
On the villas I build: Orvibo for renovation projects or tighter budgets (Zigbee, no extra cabling needed), Legrand MyHome for new builds where bus cabling can be planned from day one.
2. The reality of smart AC control in Algeria
This is the most requested feature and the most poorly implemented one. Algerian villas run almost entirely on split-unit AC from Asian brands (Condor, General, Samsung, Midea) controlled by infrared remotes. Automating them means using a universal IR controller — not a direct radio command, as some vendors imply.
The actual process: an Orvibo Kepler IR controller sits in line of sight of each AC unit. It replicates the original remote's infrared codes. The app sends a command to the hub, the hub relays it to the Kepler, the Kepler fires the IR signal. Latency is under a second.
The limitation: if someone changes the temperature manually with the original remote, the automation system has no idea — there's no state feedback over IR. That's an IR limitation, not a system flaw. On KNX projects with compatible VRV units (Daikin, Mitsubishi), state feedback becomes possible.
3. What I tell every client before they sign
Home automation isn't magic. It automates functions — it doesn't invent them. If your electrical wiring is undersized, if your dimmers aren't LED-compatible, if your motorized blinds have no proper end-stop calibration, automation won't fix any of that.
What we check before approving any automation project:
- Existing wiring — can it accept replacement actuators without a full rewire?
- Lighting type — LED-compatible dimmers are mandatory for dimming zones
- Blind motors — electronic or mechanical end-stops, correct torque for the blind's weight
- Internet quality — minimum 20 Mbps symmetric for reliable remote access across a full villa
4. Real scenarios running in a Constantine villa
- "Arrival" (triggered by gate opening or geolocation): entry and living-room lighting at 60%, living-room AC switches on, alarm disarms.
- "Goodnight": all lights off except night lamps, bedroom AC set to night mode (26°C), perimeter alarm zones armed.
- "Away": full alarm armed, AC off, simulated occupancy (lights cycling on a schedule).
- "Power outage" (detected via connected UPS): smartphone notification, security lighting activates automatically.
5. The step almost nobody bothers with: documentation
On every automation project, we hand over a full technical file: a wiring diagram with every actuator labeled, every scenario's logic exported as a PDF, a reset procedure for emergencies, and admin access given exclusively to the homeowner. If I get hit by a car tomorrow, your system stays maintainable by anyone qualified.
