If you run a business in Algeria, you already know the pattern. The cut hits without warning — mid-meeting at 2pm, or at 3am during a server backup. The real question isn't whether it will happen, but what it costs you when it does, and how much you're willing to invest so that it costs you nothing.
1. UPS vs generator: two different problems
The most common confusion: clients assume a generator replaces a UPS. They're complementary solutions addressing different failure modes entirely.
A UPS protects against micro-outages, surges, and voltage dips. Runtime ranges from a few minutes to a few hours depending on capacity. It's essential for servers, medical equipment, CCTV systems, and network switches. Without one, a 200ms micro-cut can corrupt a database or damage a hard drive.
A generator takes over for extended outages — hours, not minutes. Start-up time runs 10-30 seconds depending on the model; the UPS bridges that gap. The two systems work as a team: the UPS covers the generator's start cycle, the generator covers everything after.
2. Sizing a UPS correctly: avoid the common mistakes
A UPS is rated in VA (volt-amps), not watts. The relationship: Power (W) = VA × power factor. For IT equipment, the factor is typically 0.8.
Real example: a corporate office with 20 workstations + 2 servers + network gear:
- 20 workstations × 200W = 4,000W
- 2 servers × 500W = 1,000W
- Network equipment (switches, firewalls) = 300W
- Total: 5,300W → an 8,000 VA UPS (with 30% margin and 0.8 power factor)
- Desired runtime: 30 minutes → additional battery packs required
A quality 8,000 VA UPS (Schneider Electric APC SRT8KXLI or equivalent) runs 350,000-500,000 DZD. If someone offers an unbranded UPS at that capacity for 80,000 DZD, expect failure within 18 months.
3. The ATS: the link between generator and building
A generator without an ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) needs someone physically present to switch it on — useless if the outage hits at night. The ATS detects the outage, starts the generator, waits for the voltage to stabilize (10-30 seconds), then automatically switches the building's supply to generator power. When utility power returns, it switches back and shuts the generator down.
The ATS must be sized for the main panel's full current rating — a sizing error here can cause a short circuit during transfer. This is critical work that requires a qualified electrician, not a guess.
4. Sizing the generator: fuel, noise, and placement
For that same corporate office: if you want to power the entire building during an outage, the generator needs to cover the full load. If you only need to keep critical systems running — servers, network, emergency lighting — a load-shedding panel isolates non-priority circuits during outages instead.
Real fuel consumption for a 20 kVA diesel generator: roughly 4-5 liters per hour at normal load. For an 8-hour outage, plan for 40 liters of diesel in reserve. Placement needs to account for ventilation (generators run hot), exhaust routing, sound insulation if occupied rooms are nearby, and an oil-spill containment tray.
